Local Democracy Watch is an independent non-profit, non-partisan, non-government network with a vision to watch over a local democratic culture and value and create conscious citizens who will be the champion of good governance, monitor human rights and ensure freedom of expression.
We affirm that Local Democracy is a Human Right based on article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which says that “Every citizen shall have the right and the opportunity, without any of the distinctions mentioned in article 2 and without unreasonable restrictions: (a) to take part in the conduct of public affairs, directly or through freely chosen representatives; (b) to vote and to be elected at genuine periodic elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret ballot, guaranteeing the free expression of the will of the electors; [and] (c) to have access, on general terms of equality, to public service in his [or her] country”.
These principles of non-discrimination and participation must be held in all spheres of public life, by means of a genuine democracy.
Join us! This is a citizen’s movement. Help us identify where this right is upheld and where it is not.
